About file formats

* Compressed AVI files is an industry standard format in which the compression rates permit AVI files to be emailed in a small package form compared to the original format and is viewable via Windows Media Player

** FLV (Flash Video File Format) is an internet standard format widely accepted. It compresses audio and video at near the same rate as compressed AVI above.

(e.g. compare the sizes of a 30 second hi-res audio and video event stored in the idrive Control Center)

Compressed AVI 800 x 600 2.55MB
FLV 400 x 300 0.98MB
FLV 800 x 600 2.89MB

We recommend downloading and installing the free “open-source” FLV player from VideoLan Organization in order to view on your PC; http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.

Whichever file format you choose you can email either compressed AVI or the FLV videos in an email attachment, copy them to a USB thumb drive or burn them to a CD or DVD disc for distribution.

If you choose to use uncompressed AVI in its original hi-res format, this is typically not able to be emailed due to its large format file size. We suggest using a USB thumb drive, or burn them to a CD or DVD disc for mailing.
